Understanding Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are  a common problem being faced by many people. We have only recently started to learn more about learning disabilities. With increased knowledge of learning disabilities, we have been able to understand how to tackle these disabilities. A few learning disabilities are of a temporary or minor nature that can be solved with specialized training and education.

However, there are certain learning disabilities that are of a profound nature. These disabilities are on account of neurological problems that can be dealt with only by specialized care and attention.

Educationists and psychologists often opine that learning disabilities are not an indication of intelligence.  This has proven to be true, as many famous personalities have had learning disabilities sometime during their lives.

Children with learning disabilities should not be discriminated against. In fact, the constitution provides equal rights to everyone, and a number of laws have been passed that ensure that children with learning disabilities are provided a free education through the public school system.

Such children are entitled to personalize training programs and free access to specialized training, assistance and support.

For the understanding of learning disability, let us discuss a few of the types of learning disabilities.

Dyscalculia: In this learning disability, the child finds it difficult to work with numbers and solve basic math problems such as addition, multiplication, subtraction and division.

Dysgraphia: The main characteristic of this learning disability is that the child is not able to write properly.

Dyslexia: This learning disability results in a reduced capability to read and understand written information.

Cognitive Disorganization: A child with such a disability cannot think in an ordered or logical form. Such children may reach conclusions without proper reasoning or incremental thinking.
