The above said benefits are paid to individuals irrespective of their social status (rich or poor). But the Supplemental Security Income benefits are exclusively for poor who have become disabled and may even not be working in the past.

Thus, any person who had worked long enough at a job, which is covered under the requirements of the Social Security Act, and become disabled, they are eligible for disability benefits.
