Representation Of The Disabled In Cinema

Cinema is often construed to represent society in all its hues and colors- bright and dull, gleeful and sombre. But, the same can't be said of representation of the disabled in cinema. In spite of the fact that they form a large chunk of our population, there is little they get by the way of exposure in cinema.

In the given background, I find it heartening that a few sensitive directors have come up with great movies in recent times focusing on the dilemmas facing the lives of the disabled. One such example is the internationally acclaimed movie 'Black' by Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

I strongly feel that there should be more such attempts so that the general attitude of apathy and insensitiveness towards the disabled people gets transformed into that of love and sympathy.
